James and Heather met on a dating

app in 2021. James's opening line was a quote from The Office, which instantly hooked Heather.

Their first date was during a snowstorm and they almost bailed, but met up for coffee at Annie's Coffee and Creamery in Morgantown. They stayed there, talking, until close.

James and Heather drove down to Blackwater Falls one summer in Davis, WV. They hiked around the falls and stopped for coffee at TipTop in Thomas.

James graduated from WVU with a Ph.D. in Economics. This was the first time Heather got to meet his whole family.

James got a job at offer at North Dakota State University after completing his Ph.D. Since they were serious about their relationship and Heather was fully remote for work, they decided to move to Fargo together. They packed up a U-Haul and moved to the far north.

Heather went with James on a family trip to Maine. They stayed in a beautiful Airbnb along the water, ate lobster rolls, and visited lighthouses,

James proposed to Heather at the botanical gardens in Fargo, located next to where she would volunteer. He planned for their friends to take photos and a video to surprise her. They celebrated at a rooftop bar afterward.

James received an offer from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. They visited in early 2023 and decided, together, to move to Asheville.
